Cristiano Ronaldo did NOT vote for Best FIFA Men's Player as Portugal captainPortugal’sdy else took his place

Unexpectedly, Cristiano Ronaldo did not cast a vote at the Best FIFA Football Awards 2022 as Portugal's captain after Lionel Messi won the night's top prize.

For the second time, Messi won FIFA's prestigious award in front of Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema and colleague Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Best FIFA Men's Player award was given at a ceremony in Paris, France, and Ronaldo, who left Manchester United to join Al Nassr, did not make the 14-man shortlist.

Alongside Messi and Robert Lewandowski, the Portuguese forward, 38, already shared a record-tying two FIFA awards in 2016 and 2017.

Despite not receiving the honour in 2022, Ronaldo was still qualified to vote in each Best FIFA category because he was Portugal's captain.

Ronaldo was curiously absent when FIFA's official website published the complete list of national team leaders who cast their votes.

Ronaldo did not participate in the election for whatever reason, according to FIFA, but Pepe, a former Madrid colleague of the Al Nassr star, was chosen as Portugal's captain in his place.

Each category's voting journalists, captains, and coaches gave their top pick five points, their second pick three points, and their third pick just one point.

Messi, the Best FIFA Men's Player, was left out of Pepe's top three choices in favour of France's Kylian Mbappe.

The 40-year-old Portugal centre-back allocated his second and third-choice picks respectively to former Madrid teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema.

Speaking after his win in Paris, Messi said “It’s amazing. It’s been a tremendous year and it’s an honor for me to be here and win this award.

“Without my teammates, I wouldn’t be here. I achieved the dream I had been hoping for so long. Very few people can achieve that and I have been lucky to do so.

ez the best goalkeeper, Lionel Scaloni took home the best coach award whilst Argentina supporters won best fans.

However, viewers of the ceremony believed that a montage that featured footage of the Al Nassr player sitting on the bench humiliated five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo.

On social media, fans quickly voiced their displeasure.

"They disrespected Ronaldo again," a supporter remarked.

Another person commented, "Not the first time FIFA has treated Ronaldo with such disdain, by the way."

A third fan added: “Not a good look for FIFA to disrespect a legend of the game like that, there are other clips of him, why show one of him sat on the bench?”

In truth, the year 2022 has been a tough one for Ronaldo to say the least.

After making a stunning return to Manchester United in 2021, his second stint at Old Trafford ended bitterly after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
