US Ambassador Commends Liberia as a Democracy Model for Africa

In a recent statement, US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has lauded Liberia for its exemplary commitment to democracy, describing it as a model not only for West Africa but for the entire continent. Following her recent visit to the region, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield shared her impressions with journalists in New York, emphasizing Liberia's success in achieving a second post-civil war democratic transition, with a sitting president gracefully accepting defeat.

Liberia's recent democratic achievement stands in contrast to a wave of coups in the region, prompting the ambassador to highlight the significance of Liberia's commitment to democratic principles. President Joseph Boakai's swearing-in marked the culmination of a closely contested election in which he defeated George Weah, a former football icon turned president, by a narrow margin.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield attended President Boakai's inauguration on behalf of President Joe Biden, underscoring the United States' commitment to supporting Liberia's development. She commended Liberians for their success in maintaining democratic norms and expressed the U.S.'s unwavering dedication to assisting President Boakai in his leadership.

"Liberia has been very supportive and worked closely with us here at the UN, and we're committed to helping President Boakai succeed," Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield affirmed, emphasizing the historical alliance and partnership between the United States and Liberia.

As Liberia navigates its post-election landscape, the U.S. ambassador's recognition positions the country as a positive example of democratic governance in the broader African context. Liberia's ability to conduct democratic transitions peacefully and its commitment to upholding democratic values are acknowledged as essential contributions to the stability and progress of the region.
