The Seychelles Supreme Court handed down a four-year prison term to a 32-year-old Sierra Leonean woman on Thursday after she pleaded guilty to bringing in a restricted substance.
Memunatu Esther Camara was detained at the Seychelles International airport in April 2022 after attempting to enter the country with 1.54 kg of cocaine, according to a statement released by the Seychelles police on Friday.
Camara entered a not-guilty plea and was remanded after being brought to court. When her case began, she entered a guilty plea.
She is the second foreign woman to receive a prison term in Seychelles in a calendar year.
Elsie Esther Vambe, 45, of Zimbabwe was given two consecutive five-year prison terms in April 2022 for trafficking and importing banned substances.
A collection of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean known as Seychelles maintains a "zero tolerance" policy for using and possessing illicit narcotics.
