The All People's Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Samura Kamara, and the Sierra Leone Police engaged in a standoff on Sunday night at Mile 38 in the Port Loko District in northwestern Sierra Leone. This prompted a response from the German Embassy in Sierra Leone. We are extremely concerned about rumors of a Samura Kamara convoy incident around mile 38, the Embassy stated on social media.
The Police Chief, William Fayia Sellu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Sullay Ibrahim Sesay, were praised by the foreign delegation for their prompt action.
To ensure a peaceful, fair electoral process with inclusive multi-party and multi-candidate elections this year, the Embassy appeals for the greatest degree of moderation.
After APC supporters were stopped by the Sierra Leone Police at the Mile 38 checkpoint on Sunday, fracas broke out.
Kamara claimed on his social media campaign that the cops ambushed his convoy and fired at one of the cars. He stated that seven bullets were fired by the police "executing orders from above."
There were no reports of deaths, but the police stated they stopped Kamara's convoy because he disobeyed a previous arrangement that gave him permission to utilize 20 vehicles from the Freetown International Airport in a news statement late Sunday. They asserted that they had reason to stop the vehicles because there were 50 of them when they got to the checkpoint in question.
Some APC supporters allegedly approached the police, and they responded by making sure that order was restored at the busy checkpoint.
